St. Helena

St Helena - For a true Expedition Experience

St Helena, built in 1989 in Aberdeen, Scotland, was conceived as a dual-purpose logistics-passenger vessel to serve the remote British Overseas Territory of Saint Helena, situated in the South Atlantic Ocean. For nearly three decades, she was the island’s vital maritime lifeline, operating scheduled trips between Cape Town, Saint Helena, Ascension Island, and Walvis Bay.

In 2020 and 2021, the Saint Helena underwent an extensive, multi-million-dollar refit and modernization. The refurbishment encompassed a complete interior redesign to an exceptionally high standard, alongside a comprehensive overhaul of her mechanical and engineering systems. Significant upgrades were made to improve engine performance and reduce emissions, aligning the vessel with modern environmental standards and expectations.

Proud Heritage - Promising Future

Honoring its distinguished heritage, this ship has been transformed into a world-class expedition platform, offering guests unparalleled journeys to Antarctica and beyond while preserving the legacy of its past.

Where Expedition Embraces Comfort

Blending timeless heritage with modern innovation, this remarkable vessel offers 60 comfortable cabins and spacious public areas designed for both relaxation and discovery. Guests are invited to embark on a journey of exploration and learning, immersing themselves in the wonders of Antarctica. More than a voyage, it’s an opportunity to become an ambassador for the White Continent — experiencing its majesty while helping to preserve its future.

Off-Ship Exploration

St Helena features a fleet of 12 Zodiac inflatable boats that are designed for transporting guests during our many excursions. Our decision to limit the  passenger capacity to 98  guests means that everyone can disembark simultaneously, eliminating queues at the gangway or the need for shuttles - a common issue on other expedition ships that carry more passengers. Our experienced and knowledgeable expedition team, many of whom are specialists in wildlife, geography, or history, operate the Zodiacs boats. All of our Zodiacs are equipped with state-of-the-art safety equipment, including back up radio communications to the ship, a GPS, spare fuel tank and  comprehensive kit full of important essential safety gear. You are in experienced hands.
